“Daddy, I fallen for a monster.”

“Black Heart” by Stooshe | When I first heard of Stooshe as part of the longlist for this year’s BBC Sound Of poll, I was a bit skeptical. Hip-hop Spice Girls? The first song of theirs that I heard was this one – it’s pretty Motown-y, if you ask me, so I was sold. And then I went back to their first single, “Betty Woz Gone”, and I feel a bit foolish for pigeonholing these girls. It’s quite bouncy yet authentic, down to the cussing – something I don’t get on Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday. (Not a stab at Nicki: I just think she’s better in small doses.) I don’t think they’ll really explode on the scene like most other hip-hop artists – not that it’s exactly correct to call them one – but there’s part of me that thinks, “at least they do things pretty better than most of everybody else.”

Got something?
