Review: Devotion by Jessie Ware

Devotion by Jessie WareThe first I heard of Jessie Ware was the song “110%”, which led me to pretty much dismiss her as a dubstep-ish artist. Wrong, of course. That does not wholly represent the sophistication of her album Devotion, a record that’s both intense and elegant. The clubby (dubstep-ish, again) production doesn’t distract at all from her courageous yet vulnerable voice, one that does not go further than it should, and yet says a lot. From the obvious highlight “Wildest Moments” to the funky “Sweet Talk” and the impactful “Swan Song”, Ware comes in discreetly and yet blows you away. Okay, maybe that was a bit hyperbolic, because she doesn’t really go out there, and for good reason. Ware would fit anywhere, perhaps blend in too much, and still get noticed. | 5/5
