Review: King Animal by Soundgarden

King Animal by SoundgardenIt’s been sixteen years since Soundgarden released a studio album, but it’s as if they never went away. But yeah, you can say that because Chris Cornell was everywhere in those sixteen years. But he’s back home now, and no Timbaland in sight: King Animal reminds us of what Soundgarden was good at – sludgy guitars with a bit of a groove, and of course, Cornell’s soaring, dare I say soulful, vocals. “Been Away Too Long” starts the record in a slightly meta note, leading to twelve more tracks of heavy riffs and a lovely melody, best heard in “A Thousand Days Before” and “Halfway There”. By the time the album ends, with a stripped-down “Rowing”, you’ll be glad that despite the long break, they haven’t really changed a lot. Still like the good old days. | 4/5
