“I pledge myself allegiance to a better night’s sleep at home.”

“Fader” by the Temple Trap | I write this on a Sunday, and Chesca is trying to convince me to go watch the first Wanderland Festival in Makati happening on 18 May. A pretty good line-up, if you ask me, especially if you’re a disenfranchised indie kid: the Temper Trap is headlining, with Nada Surf and Neon Trees among the other foreign acts supporting. Of course she can’t convince me – I’m not into any of those bands (with Neon Trees being a huge “meh” for me) and, if you know me, I will only shell money for a concert if it’s an act I really, really, really like. But that aside – and the organizers’ insistence to mention, at every opportunity, that they are behind this event; it feels achingly corporate – this is a step in the right direction. Here’s hoping Wanderland becomes a success. Here’s hoping it leads to Manila becoming a destination for newer, credible, not-quite-mainstream acts. We can’t always fly to Singapore for Laneway and Big Day Out, after all. (If you’re reading from Australia, could you tell another one of your music festivals to come on over here? Please?)
