Review: Bankrupt! by Phoenix

Bankrupt! by PhoenixWhen I first heard “Entertainment”, the first track off Phoenix’s fifth album Bankrupt!, I commented that the band’s attempt to sound like a “light orchestral version of Oracular Spectacular-era MGMT” is distracting – but I thought it might grow on me, and after a few weeks, it did. So maybe that’s what’s going to happen to me in the next few weeks with the rest of the album. Bankrupt!, like its first single, is classic Phoenix with added synths. That permeates throughout the album, adding warmth to some tracks (the closer “Oblique City”, the tic-ful “The Real Thing”) while making others sound hackneyed and dated (most of the album’s second half). Has the band gotten lazy? No – this sounds as meticulous as their best stuff. But maybe it’s the wrong kind of meticulous. | 3/5
