“What the world needs now… is not another love song.”

“Pop Top 40” by Branford Marsalis Quartet featuring Terence Blanchard | Another gem that I heard from that lovely French station FIP – this one, from the soundtrack to the Spike Lee film Mo’ Better Blues (which, inevitably, I haven’t seen – I’m not that much of a film geek like some of my friends). This struck me for the message in the beginning: everything you hear on the radio is a love song. When I was in college I made this exact same point to a friend – whether it’s a heavy metal song or a cheesy ballad, everything is all about love. Well, how can you write a song about something you have absolutely no interest about? And what about the people you hate? What about, say, Taylor Swift’s songs about never ever ever getting back with whoever? She still cares…

Got something?
