“Don’t you think that it’s boring how people talk?”

“Tennis Court” by Lorde | Another artist I’m digging through listening to KINK, and another artist slowly bubbling upwards in American airwaves, is someone I’m pretty sure I heard on Triple J, perhaps on the mere fact that she’s from New Zealand. (More proof that the Kiwis love their electronica.) Lorde – Ella Yelich-O’Connor, if we’re going by real names – is gaining buzz in the States thanks to “Royals”, a song that’s sweet on the outside but is sufficiently twisted to be memorable. “I can be your ruler. You can call me Queen Bee.” I’m having visuals of a dominant female (and yes, I know mentioning that makes me sound bad). And then this one, which you probably heard during the recent Wimbledon coverage: “baby be the class clown, I’ll be the beauty queen in tears.” I swear there’s a theme, at least between these two songs. Girl’s twisted and moody and I love it. [NB]
