Review: Body Music by AlunaGeorge

Body Music by AlunaGeorgeI’m writing this review with a significant amount of goodwill for Aluna Francis and George Reid, and Body Music – the duo’s debut album, after more than a year of single-based teasing and a bit of critical acclaim – doesn’t disappoint. But it definitely has a long way to go. Halfway through the album you can determine the AlunaGeorge sound – the tendency to sample Aluna’s voice, the sparse bursts here and there – to the point that you can set your clock by it. But those very same attributes make them an exciting prospect. Aluna’s innocent, spunky coo, coupled with George’s hints of garage and 80s soul, is still a breath of fresh air after all these months, and Body Music does not wear out the welcome… although a change of pace, perhaps along the lines of their “This Is How We Do It” cover at the end, is appreciated. [NB] | 4/5
