“When I am with you, there’s no place I’d rather be.”

“Rather Be” by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne | I was supposed to write about this song a few weeks back, when the latest single from British quarter Clean Bandit hit the top of the British charts, but then I decided to see if it will be there for another week. It’s dropped a few places since, but the song’s starting to be ubiquitous elsewhere now – well, not yet, but soon, I bet. I heard the song and loved it, and early this week I heard it again and, well, figured out why, I think. That minimal intro riff, sounding very mid-2000s. The piano and the dance beat sounding very 80s. That violin – apparently the band’s selling point, considering their previous releases, but to me, it just reminds me very much of the better pop hits of the 90s. So, yes, a song that crosses all of these eras, although to the youngsters – and to me – this is just one damn good song. Anybody playing this song here in Manila? [NB]
