Review: Strangers to Ourselves by Modest Mouse

strangerstoourselvesIt’s been eight years since Modest Mouse released an album, and they release one with their shortest title yet. But this review won’t be about semantics, no. Strangers to Ourselves is an interesting creature, one defined more by style than substance. Don’t worry, though. The lyrics are still imaginative and a touch of acerbic, but the sounds go all over the place. “Coyotes” is straightforward Modest Mouse, but the track that precedes it, “The Ground Walks, With Time In A Box”, is a particularly rowdy disco stomper. “Pistol” goes even further, sounding very much like a mid-00s pop record. “The Best Room”, finally, has an unlikely shimmer around it. It’s the diverse range of styles that define this record, and that makes it an exhilarating listen. In the end, though, I felt a bit exhausted, looking for a bit of redemption amidst the arguably carnival-like atmosphere. [NB] | 3/5
