Great Philippine Song Hits“Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika” by Hajji Alejandro | In December last year President Noynoy Aquino designated the last week of July as “Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino” – a celebration of Filipino music. Well, let’s do a whole month, then. All this month we’ll be highlighting great Philippine song hits – yes, “song hits”, because that’s just how we always did it, yes? Classy or corny, classic or contemporary, we’ll be featuring 23 enduring Filipino songs throughout the month. (We’ll still do album reviews and the occasional foreign track, of course.) We begin with Ryan Cayabyab’s seminal composition, his winning submission to the first Metro Manila Popular Music Festival in 1977, interpreted by Hajji Alejandro. The message may not be subtle, but it is a rousing ode to the best of Filipino music, down to that very 70s arrangement – and this is, naturally, the best way for us to begin. [NB]
