“Pag-alis mo’y sadyang kay bilis din.”

Great Philippine Song Hits“Isang Linggong Pag-Ibig” by Imelda Papin | This song was also a shoo-in on the list, because what’s Filipino music without the cheesy songs about love and heartbreak? And this one hits both in one go. Imelda Papin is called the “Sentimental Songstress” in some circles – we do tend to give ridiculous nicknames to balladeers, don’t we? – but then again, “Isang Linggong Pag-Ibig”, the Bicolana’s first big hit, is sentimental. (This one, more so. Please forgive the video.) Imelda, of course, wasn’t alone: you can connect her to her contemporaries – Eva Eugenio, Claire dela Fuente – and to the modern crop of divas, like Angeline Quinto. After all, we are all romantics. I did argue once that all songs are love songs, and we tend to do lots of those in the traditional manner. [NB]
