“Tulad ng pag-agos mo, ‘di mapipigil ang puso kong nagliliyab.”

Great Philippine Song Hits“Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka” by Basil Valdez | I have seen Basil Valdez live, once, by accident. A friend and I finished watching a film (it was a school requirement) and found ourselves lingering a bit to watch one of the better known Filipino pop singers of the 70s and 80s sing his classics accompanied by an orchestra. That seemed to be Basil’s thing, at least in the latter part of his career. His songs soundtracked a good part of those two decades, both through his collaborations with Ryan Cayabyab (he wrote this song, which was later covered by everyone from Regine Velasquez to the Eraserheads) and later as singer of choice for many movie theme songs. Now, like his contemporaries Rey Valera and Hajji Alejandro, he performs all over, throwing us back to a time when things seemed simpler. I mean, I did not grow up in those times, but I still felt that. And he still sounds very good for his age. (Thanks to Ariane – who, incidentally, is the friend I was referring to – for the suggestion.) [NB]
