Review: Another One by Mac DeMarco

Another One by Mac DeMarcoBy now you know the things Mac DeMarco gets up to. His playful subversion has defined his records, so much so that it’s looking like a cheap gimmick to some. Another One, his latest record, sees him give out his home address for coffee at the end. Well, that’s the gimmick, but that also serves a point. The songs are playful, but the sentiments are quite deep. He’s clearly heartbroken. He’s not moving on. He’s not dealing with it well. He’s trying, but he’s really just distraught. Why not come by? Another One is a satisfying release from the Canadian singer-songwriter: not anything revolutionary by the grand scheme of things, but one where he slightly refines his arguably eccentric approach. Slightly meta, deeply affecting, mostly rewarding. [NB]4/5
