Review: Positive Songs for Negative People by Frank Turner

Positive Songs for Negative People by Frank TurnerFrank Turner has, lately, slowly mastered the art of the sing-along. “The Next Storm”, the lead off his latest record, Positive Songs for Negative People, is an irresistible earworm, stuck in my head in recent weeks, forcing me to sing about holding on and batting down. It’s that formula that he’s worked well with, on this record and on his previous one, Tape Deck Heart: heartfelt songs designed to be sung with the highest degrees of rowdiness, providing catharsis to those who need it. The difference between the two records is the latest one’s up-and-up mood: it never quite lets up, and although there’s a narrative arc that makes the album enjoyable, it does get tiring after a while. On one read it feels empty; on another, it’s just lost for words. But the songs are still enjoyable, especially the respite of “Silent Key”, which slows things down just enough to both provide a breather and keep the pace. [NB] | 3/5
