Review: Yours, Dreamily, by the Arcs

Yours, Dreamily, by the ArcsThe most off-putting thing about Yours, Dreamily, the first record from the Arcs, is how much it sounds like, well, the Black Keys, only with a different act. Yes, the fact that this is actually a side project of that band’s Dan Auerbach is well known. And yes, we also know that there’s some pretty significant musical punch on there – Amy Winehouse collaborator Nick Movshon, Dap-Tones drummer Homer Steinweiss, among others. But the whole album sounds like, well, the Black Keys, and only slightly in a parallel universe. No, I’m not saying Dan should’ve tried singing differently. No, I’m not saying the rest of the band ended up following the veteran band’s sound. I’m just saying this all feels weird. There’s a bit more soul involved, sure, and when that shines, the album gets really interesting – but, for the most part, this all feels weird. [NB]3/5
