“Who’s going to save me from the dark side of the street?”

“Save Me” by Fernando | Now, the last of the items on the backlog, and another thing sent in by John at Fluff and Gravy. I have not heard of Fernando before. You might’ve, you better-knowing people: he’s steadily made his way through the American scene, first with his band before going solo, but medical issues meant he almost lost his voice. It’s been half a decade since the Portland-based singer’s last album, and last Friday he returned with his eighth, Leave the Radio On. The support is pretty significant, with musicians for the likes of Elliott Smith and M. Ward pitching in, not to mention Peter Buck of R.E.M. But the centerpiece here is Fernando, his lyrics and his brooding quality. Leave the Radio On builds up, creeps up on you, and quietly explodes into this little delight of an album. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s worth a listen. It’s now available in the usual places. [NB] (Have things I should hear? Drop me a line here.)
