Review: Return to the Moon by El Vy

Return to the Moon by El VyEl Vy is a collaboration between Matt Berninger, that distinct voice from the National, and Brent Knopf, jangler for Menomena. With that in mind, it’s very (very) easy to think of Return to the Moon as the best of the two groups’s sounds combined. And, well, it is. Call it a mash-up. In some cases, the combination make for some interesting results (like the eerily quiet “Sleepin’ Light”) while in others it makes for an interestingly rowdy product (“I’m The Man To Be” is just so playful). But for the most part, El Vy’s debut is the sum of its parts. It’s fine, but you just know they could push things a bit further. Or maybe it’s all the baggage that comes with it. [NB]3/5
