“No, I won’t let you down and run.”

“Be The One” by Dua Lipa | What does it say about a musician when the first thing one thinks is “isn’t that [another musician]?” Sometimes it’s good, but sometimes it isn’t. I’m not sure about Dua Lipa. “Be The One” – which was released last October, although I only heard it last week – really did remind me of Haim, and not just because of the similarities of her vocals to Danielle Haim’s; the breathy, minimal, electro-flavored pop sounds like some of the more ethereal bits from Days Are Gone. Admittedly that’s a slightly unfair assessment. “New Love” shows off her voice more, with an almost tribal drum beat, although the same tricks are still there. Same goes with her most recent single, “Last Dance”. The English-Albanian singer might have suffered from timing, as the Haim path has been very much well-trodden in past years, but maybe she could breathe life to it. Or maybe she’ll fall by the wayside once Haim returns. Am I being unfair? I thought I was. [NB]
