Review: Views by Drake

Views by DrakeYes, Drake is a guy you either like or hate. His hip-hop is different, and that produces mixed results, although he clearly has a lot of people liking him. Views, thus, is a highly-anticipated (and highly-hyped) return, his first album in three years (and I’m not counting If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, the mixtape he released last year). It’s got Drake’s usual introspective lyrics and chilled delivery, sure – but a part of me feels he’s getting bored with it, or he’s stuck in a rut. At eighty minutes, Views is a bit of an effort, and considering the mostly monotonous nature of the record, it can feel like a sludge. There are points when things pick up – “Westen Road Flows”, “Too Good”, “One Dance”; points where the formula gets pulled apart a bit – bit then it also suffers from the rest being more of the same. The fans might like it that way, but even they have to admit Views is an effort. [NB]3/5
