Review: Insane Love by Sistar

Insane Love by SistarFor the K-pop fan, it’s not summer if Sistar does not make a comeback. True enough, Insane Love is released a day after the summer solstice. But the group’s recent efforts have not been inspiring, sticking closely to the bright, light template of the beachside summer song. (“Touch My Body” and “Shake It” can sound so alike.) But this mini-album’s cover suggests a classier, more exclusive take on the summer song. The title track, “I Like That”, comes close to fulfilling it, with shades of 80s sophistipop and the usual dose of jumpiness. Of course, an old dog can learn new tricks, but it won’t happen overnight, so the rest of the album sounds, well, typical Sistar – although there are more horns than usual, and the midtempo “Say I Love You” embraces the classy tag more than the rest of the non-title tracks. All in all, a good effort. Maybe we should not be so excited, though. [NB]3/5
