“Mukhang tinamaan yata ako.”

“Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso” by Donna Cruz | We’re at it again, dedicating the whole of July to Filipino songs that can be considered classics, in celebration of Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino at the end of this month. We begin with, well, this. It’s an earworm, isn’t it? I remember one of my friends having a phase where this was on her head for a couple of weeks. I’ve had that too. That intro, that doo-wop intro. That very 90s feel. That walk in the park feel. Or, in my case, SJ Walk in La Salle, when you’re feeling a bit fluttery. Donna Cruz has been in and out of the spotlight since this song – the same friend remembers her for Do Re Mi, that film with Regine Velasquez and Mikee Cojuangco, another hallmark of our 1990s childhoods. I think she’s just staged a relatively low-key comeback. Not a problem. We will always remember this track. It will always bring us back. [NB]
