“Wala ring mangyayari kung pag-isipan pa.”

“Tuloy Pa Rin” by Labuyo | There’s a YouTube comment about how this song was actually the B-side to a single. That comment came from someone, it seems, who worked during the song’s production. He suggested the B-side will be the classic. True enough, it is, although arguably it’s Side A’s version, released in 1993, that plucked this song out from obscurity and towards classic status. It’s certainly the first version I heard. (We will talk about Side A next week.) Anyway, Labuyo. I can find little about this band, but I do know they were around during the 1970s, during the early days of the Manila rock scene as propelled by DZRJ. (If you think about it, you can split Filipino alternative’s heyday by radio station: the WXB years, the NU years, and begrudgingly, the Jam years.) Back then rock music was heavily influenced by American acts of the time, as well as the folk rock movement that was gaining a voice as martial law crept in. Amidst all that, there’s something optimistic and simple about this song. No wonder it’s timeless. [NB]
