“Sino ang magpupuno sa’king paglalambing?”

“Bakit Pa” by Jessa Zaragoza | Yes, we’re going there. We’ve been planning to write about the jukebox queens of the 1970s on this feature, but the fact that we did not live through the era means we’re not sure where to start. (Although I can spout some names.) So, instead, we go to Jessa Zaragoza, who was known as the “jukebox queen” of the 1990s. I’ll admit, this feature is fueled once again by my childhood. A part of me was always fascinated by how the sound of the letter R (as in “rrrr”) always comes out at particular points in Jessa’s singing. Also, the whole “isn’t she an actress?” thing. Yes, it may sound cheesy now – most of those “jukebox” songs do, admittedly – but a part of me, perhaps wearing rose-tinted glasses, will like this song for Jessa’s vocals and that sense of climax. (Same goes with “‘Di Ba’t Ikaw”, her second single.) Even if the music video is cheesy and fairly rudimentary now, that is. [NB]
