“She’s already taken me.”

Great Philippine Song Hits“The Day You Said Goodnight” by Hale | Told you, college hits – and high school hits, too, in the case of my sister, who had Hale’s debut CD and battered it with plays when I was a college freshman. I had a different favorite song from the album but this one (and “Broken Sonnet”) was inescapable; it just sang of heartbreak, and we all seemed to be heartbroken in one way or another at the time. Listening back to this, I’m actually struck at how thin the song is – it certainly felt really grand at the time. This is no criticism. I actually think that powered Champ Lui Pio’s songwriting and singing – he stretched it – further, drilling down the point that it’s all over, it’s all over. Hale is another one of those acts unfortunately lumped at that “pogi rock” category, but I always thought the songwriting – no fuss nor pretensions – stood out. I never felt guilty listening to them, although I’ll admit to falling off the wagon when I began working, around the same time as their first split. Glad they’re back and doing what they’ve always done, to a new, eager-eared audience. [NB]
