「わたしは本当はすなおでやさしいヒトなの。」

「いつか王子様が」 by Akiko Yano | I literally woke up to this today. I fell asleep to Radio 4 – a sign of my shifting radio preferences, again, only this time speech radio is not conducive to a music blogger out for “content” – and woke up with the hankering for Radio 3, where Nick Luscombe was hosting Late Junction, a show I’ve always wanted to try if not for the fact that it’s on at six in the morning my time. This was the first song he played. Akiko Yano is of that era in Japanese pop when experimentation was rife; she frequently collaborated with the Yellow Magic Orchestra (she was married to Ryuichi Sakamoto) and was often compared to Kate Bush. This song – “Someday I’ll Meet My Prince” is how it translates – was released in 1981, and as with most of the early J-pop I’ve stumbled upon it sounds so modern, and yet so Japanese, too. (At least if only for the YMO similarities.) Also, this is a really good way to wake up in the morning. Try it. [NB]
