Review: Triage by Methyl Ethel

Triage by Methyl EthelAnd now, another representative from the fuzzy side of Australian indie, although Methyl Ethel aren’t exactly new to this. Triage is their third record, and perhaps I’m saying this because I’ve just discovered them, but this seems to also be their attempt to break out into the wider arena, after getting a bit more attention in other parts of the world. For the most part, it works. There’s a familiarity to their music – then again, in recent years we’ve seen many shades of psychedelic permeate through the indie sphere, complete with just as many shades of weirdness. Methyl Ethel toe the line nicely, with the focus squarely on the hooks; Triage is a comfortable listen, although you feel it doesn’t hold you as much as you expect it to. Or maybe it’s me expecting the weird stuff. It’s there, but it tends to not really spring up on you. That perhaps makes this record a bit more cunning than you’d give it credit for. [NB]3/5
