Great Philippine Song Hits“Anak” by Freddie Aguilar | Also a finalist on the first Metro Manila Popular Music Festival is “Anak”, arguably the most important song from Freddie Aguilar, and one of the most important Filipino songs in general. The prodigal son (or daughter) story is, indeed, universal, and it was translated into multiple languages and became popular in other countries around the world. It also turned Freddie from busker to folk hero, the man responsible for reviving an old song and turning it into the rallying cry of the opposition during the Marcos era, and… well… lately he’s more known for the controversies he and his family courts. But when he grabs that guitar and sings his songs that manage to be both universal and very Filipino, you just get lost in it. (Thanks to Jose for the suggestion.) [NB]
