“It would be easy if I could split my heart into three.”

“For Me, For Her, For You” by John Adams | Here’s something new from John Adams, the singer-songwriter who, the first time I wrote about him back in February, I compared to James Blunt – not unfavorably; I think my hook was that comparison. This is off his upcoming album You Never Know Who’s Listening, and it’s a relatively straightforward track whose lyrics make me really keen for it. It’s simple, yes, but it’s lovely. Again, his earnestness keeps it going, but nicely this does not feel like an ordinary song from the get-go – it quickly captures that special thing at the very start, and I think that’s worth writing home about. “It will never change the things that make you beautiful.”

“Things That Make You Beautiful” by John Adams | Is it bad that the first thing that went to my head when I plugged this in was “he sounds like James Blunt!” But then again, when did everybody hate him? But I digress. John Adams is from the middle of southern Wales, and if you watched the X Factor you might remember him for this moment. He didn’t go far – this was the season that Little Mix won – but he did get to music, releasing an EP in 2013. “Things That Make You Beautiful” is his new single, powered by an earnestness that isn’t cloying – and, well, an instrumentation that’s built to tug the heart strings. (And the press release does say James Blunt.) And then there’s the music video, which is just simple yet powerful. This one’s off his upcoming EP, which should be out in a few months’ time. Around June, perhaps. [NB] (Have things I should hear? Drop me a line here.)
