“If I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight, will you pardon me?”

Rainy Martini's Uke Week“Tiptoe Through The Tulips” by Tiny Tim | Ooooh, I dare you to sing this out loud. In a gig or something. Ha! I heard this song before, somehow, back when I was a kid. And all this time I thought it was a woman singing! Slap me for only finding out a few weeks ago. I linked the video to my brother and now everyone in the house is singing in his opera voice. I’m thanking the late Tiny Tim for bringing harmony I to my family through… the window? Ha! [SY]

“Don’t call me boo like you’re some kind of ghost.”

Rainy Martini's Uke Week“Title” by Meghan Trainor | Meghan Trainor blew me away when I saw a video of her sing “All About That Bass” live. With a ukulele! I never really noticed how popular the ukulele had become in the past year, but my friend Janine and I had a hard time looking for a music store that sells one that isn’t damaged or low-quality. There were tons, back when I bought my pink babeh. But there seems to be some sort of shortage these days. I even had trouble finding one for my brother two weeks ago. Or maybe I just didn’t know where to look. Janine’s blaming the shortage on Trainor though. And Vance Joy. I kinda “get” it, but I still have my doubts. [SY]

“I’ll win your heart with a woop-a-woo.”

Rainy Martini's Uke Week“Toothpaste Kisses” by the Maccabees | I like the Maccabees. I remember listing them as one of my favorites back when Niko and I were just friends. Now we’re frenemies. Or are we? Jake Shimabukuro once said that the ukulele is the music instrument of peace. (Ironic because he said those words before playing “Bohemian Rhapsody”.) At first it reminded me of the ocean, or a bottle of coconut sunblock lotion, or hula dancers. But along the way I realized how it always gives you happy vibes, no matter how sad the song you’re playing is. Maybe it’s just the absence of bass strings but I’ll call it the uke magic. This song has bar chords and the strumming is continuous, so if you’re a beginner, it’s a good song to play if you want to practice your grip. [SY]

“In space, we’re here a million miles away.”

Rainy Martini's Uke Week“The Moon Song” by Karen O featuring Ezra Koenig | I’ll be brave enough to say that I had a uke before it was cool…er. I had always found it cool. My relatives used to buy me some when they get back from Cebu, although my mom prefers the banduria. I’m the only proper musician in my family though. I reunited with them strings half a year ago and got this glittery pink soprano baby. I must admit I only bought it because it’s cute and photogenic. Now I kinda wish I got the usual brown pieces made from quality wood like acacia or something. But mine still sounds decent. Anyway. I got carried away. On to Karen O. I’ve never seen Her, but I discovered the song through fellow ukulele enthusiasts (they’re usually beginners; I considered myself a beginner too, but not anymore) who wanted to learn finger picking. Or a lovely song to play. “The Moon Song” is very verrry pleasant, what with Karen O’s breathy falsetto, and in my opinion, it’s a must-learn if you’re a ukulele player too. [SY]
